The Department of Aging and Community Living (DACL) serves District residents 60 and older, adults living with disabilities, and those who care for them. In partnership with more than 20 community-based organizations across the city, we offer more than 40 free or low-cost programs to help all District residents live boldly at any age, stage, or ability.

If you believe that an adult you know is being mistreated, exploited, or abused, Adult Protective Services (APS) can help assess and provide support. Now housed within the Department of Aging and Community Living (DACL), APS team members work to protect vulnerable adults from physical, financial, or emotional abuse, as well as neglect and self-neglect. APS social workers help to ensure that DC residents in need of protection are connected to the services they need.

Medicare beneficiaries, their families, and caregivers living in the District of Columbia can access free health insurance information, counseling, education, and assistance through our DC State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP). SHIP counselors are trained to get you the information you need and can work with you directly to understand the ins and outs of Medicare so you can make informed decisions about your healthcare and insurance coverage.
